Wild Hearts Vintage

La-Nee Isherwood is the creative mind behind online vintage store  Wild Hearts Vintage. With a penchant for fresh flowers, candles at dinner and cloud watching, the self-described dreamer is completely charming. Vintage-lovers, take note - head over to her store and be prepared to immerse yourself in a sea of treasure! While you're at it, check out the Wild Hearts Vintage blog, which documents La-Nee's thoughts, adventures, inspirations and beautiful photographs. Amidst racks of clothing, the free-spirited beauty emerged to talk life as an online vintage store owner.

What is your background in fashion?
I started sewing and designing my own little creations at a young age, experimenting with fabrics and textures. I’ve always had an interest in fashion and as I’ve grown older it’s flowered into a fervent pastime. After completing high school I decided to study fashion to further my skills in sewing and pattern making. I still feel there is too much to cover in the duration of the course, so I hope my knowledge will keep developing as my aspirations do.

How would do you describe your personal style?
My personal style is exactly that - personal. It reflects my tastes and changes with my mood, my aspirations, my intentions and my day. My style is consistently vintage, simplistic, focused on small details and inspired by a blithe spirit.

What are your key fashion influences?
I’m heavily inspired by history and fashion of bygone eras, especially the 60s and 70s. The 60s and 70s were a time of great change and upheaval in our society. This change was no more evident than in the course and evolution of fashion and music of this era. Suzanne Ford Carafano’s style makes me weak at the knees. She has a real zeal for fashion and I admire her perspective on life. Edith Sedgwick and Isabel Lucas are also muses.

What are three rules you apply to getting dressed?
Vintage, comfort, flair.

What do you adore about vintage clothing?
Quite impressively, there are the factors of vintage being well made from quality fabrics, which have proven to
endure decades and have been cared for by their previous owners. Yet the thing that I adore most about vintage is the known and unknown. Vintage was once new and owned by a vogue soul. What makes my imagination marvel is dreaming about where it has been worn once before, the nature of the personality who wore it and the story behind the piece. I love when friends show me treasures that belonged to their mothers or grandmothers. It’s important to love and cherish vintage, it holds within it so much history. Trends come in frequent waves, but vintage will always hold itself as “timeless”.

How did you get the inspiration for 'Wild Hearts Vintage'?
At the age of 16 I started accumulating vintage pieces, which evolved into an obsession. At first my collection was of personal interest, then my motives changed. As soon as my eyes set upon a beautiful or an idiosyncratic piece, regardless of its size or style, I had to possess it. A subconscious dream was seeping into my horizon. While studying I started considering my career options. I made an audacious decision to pursue my love for vintage and to write a new chapter in my life.

Who is the 'Wild Hearts Vintage' girl?
A girl with an untameable heart.

What does the process of acquiring your stock involve?
It’s quite a laborious process from when you first purchase the stock to when it arrives in store. The job involves frequent shopping - I hand select my stock, which is sourced locally in Victoria. The threads are checked for imperfections, followed by laundering and alterations which are made if necessary. Garment descriptions are documented along with the measurements. Photos are taken and edited, then all the details are added to the store.

What does a regular day in the life of La-nee entail?
No day is ever regular. I don’t want to live each day like a carbon copy and even if I tried it wouldn’t come naturally. I do ensure I set tasks to be finished by a certain time, but I think it’s important to listen to your dispositions and use all your positive energy to complete your endeavors.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
“Blowin’ in the wind.”

Thanks La-Nee! Take a peek at her gorgeous gift wrapping.

Tourist Magazine

I love a good online mag, and Tourist Magazine is just that. Created by Sanna Berger of notoriety for her previous blog The Vagabond Set, Tourist Magazine aims to feature "real people with real vision and real considerations". Staying true to this philosophy, it provides a platform for all kinds of creative types to share their work, be it surprising, inspiring or challenging. Without the eminence of flashy advertising, airbrushed models, fancy photography and superficial editorial content, there is a raw, organic sensibility about it. Here are a selection of my favourite "fashion" shots, but be sure to check out each issue's visual diaries and Free Camera Project series.

Pre-fall 2011

Four favourite looks from four favourite pre-fall '11 collections.

1. The Row

2. Celine

3. Viktor and Rolf

4. Gucci

Keeping in line with the "seventies fever" prevalent throughout Spring/Summer '11, The Row paid homage to Bianca Jagger and Gucci channeled London at the dawn of the era. Meanwhile, Celine sent a nod to members of the 1950's British underground scene and Viktor and Rolf contrasted tuxedo elegance against streetwear 'tude. What appeals me to these looks, albeit the differing themes they're based on, is the sharp, structured silhouettes they feature. From boyish blazers and cigarette pants to light layering and subdued palettes, masculinity and minimalism merge to result in cool, covetable collections that I'll definitely be drawing inspiration from in the cooler months.

The 'Stylish Blogger Award'

A certain lovely lady nominated me for the 'Stylish Blogger Award' (thank you!), for which I am supposed to fill readers in on seven things about me.
  1. Career-wise, I've always had a huge interest in the magazine industry. As a pre-teen, I'd use an old school Microsoft programme called 'Creative Writer' to create my own cheesy Dolly/Girlfriend-inspired magazines. My first work experience was at age 14 in Cleo's fashion department - I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. One of my favourite things to do is huddle in a corner of Borders with piles of glossy goodness.
  2. I failed maths, economics and science to epic proportions in high school.  Meanwhile, I adored English, history and art. The logical component of my brain is severely lacking, whereas I've always been creatively inclined. If I wasn't pursuing journalism and PR, I'd be delving into film, literature, design, art, photography or interiors.
  3. I would rather deck myself out in pre-loved clothing than the latest and greatest designer pieces. While I adore contemporary fashion, I am completely drawn to unique items with history behind them. I could spend hours trawling through vintage shops and second-hand market stalls, and sometimes nothing beats uncovering a thrift store gem.
  4. I have an ever-growing owl collection. It started with a little high-school joke created by a boy in the year above me who used to "hoooooooooot" whenever I walked past (apparently I have large eyes, although I don't really see it, pun intended). Soon after that my friends and family started buying me owl gifts, from ornaments to jewellery, and now my bedroom is a little owl haven. Hoot hoot.
  5. I wish I could play a musical instrument, but despite dabbling in piano as a kiddie, I totally lack the patience. Nonetheless, I am a music lover! Some all-time favourites include David Bowie, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Runaways, Cat Power, Sonic Youth, The Smiths, Joy Division, New Order, The Rolling Stones and I could go on for days. But music experienced live is the best.
  6. Restaurant dates, dinner parties and picnic adventures are up there on my list of favourite things to do. Over the years I've gained an appreciation for awesome food, and even though I tend to party more than I probably should, sometimes I'd rather just stay home and unwind in the kitchen. I don't have much of a sweet tooth, nor a liking for fast food, but give me something fresh, vego-friendly and delicious - and I'm yours forever.
  7. I am a walking Virgo cliché!
A condition of the award is to pass it on to 15 bloggers I'm liking. In no particular order:
  1. Tovemp
  2. Ligh✝s Drive My Soul
  3. Knock You For Six
  4. The Melbourne Bell Tower
  5. A Fickle Fashionista
  6. Nostalgia

  9. Leather and Lace
  10. Pearls and Lace Dresses
